Lord Ganpati
"Before every prayer, every journey, every new beginning — we bow to Ganpati first."
Who is Lord Ganpati?
Lord Ganpati, the beloved son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, is worshipped as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles, and the Lord of auspicious beginnings. With His elephant head, gentle presence, and wise gaze, He represents strength, intelligence, patience, and joy. In our tradition, no sacred journey, ceremony, or new beginning feels complete without first invoking His name. At Swarseva, His Aavahan marks the opening of every devotional gathering, inviting His blessings to clear the path, calm the heart, and fill the space with happiness, wisdom, and divine grace.
The origin of Ganpati’s elephant head is rooted in a moving story of a mother’s love and a son’s duty. Created by Goddess Parvati to guard her doorway, the young boy stood firm even before Lord Shiva, not knowing who He was. After the conflict that followed, Shiva restored him with the head of a powerful elephant and blessed him to be worshipped first in every ceremony. The modak, dear to Ganpati, symbolises the sweet reward of wisdom, devotion, and inner discipline — the joy that comes when obstacles are overcome with faith.
"Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha — the one with the curved trunk, the great body, radiant as a million suns."
— Ganpati Vandana, Traditional3 Teachings of Lord Ganpati
The spiritual wisdom embodied in Ganpati's form and stories
Ganpati’s large ears remind us to listen more than we speak. True wisdom begins with patient listening — to others, to their prayers, and to the quiet voice within. In daily life, this helps us understand better, reduce conflict, and respond with kindness.
Ganpati’s trunk symbolises strength with flexibility. It can uproot a tree and yet gently lift a small needle. This teaches us to remain strong during life’s challenges, while staying gentle, precise, and adaptable in our thoughts, actions, and decisions.
Ganpati’s small mouth teaches the value of speaking less and speaking wisely. Words should be necessary, kind, and thoughtful. By avoiding unnecessary arguments, gossip, or harsh speech, we conserve inner energy and create a calmer, more peaceful mind.
Origin & Sacred Stories
The beloved tales of Ganpati's birth, wisdom, and divine grace
According to tradition, the origin of Lord Ganpati is a beautiful story of a mother’s love, a son’s duty, and divine grace. Goddess Parvati, while preparing for her bath, created a young boy from the turmeric paste and clay of her own body. She breathed life into him and lovingly accepted him as her son. She then asked him to guard the entrance and allow no one to enter.
When Lord Shiva returned, the young boy, unaware of who He was, stopped Him at the doorway. Faithful to his mother’s command, he refused to move. This led to a great conflict between Shiva and the boy. Seeing Parvati’s grief after the child was harmed, Shiva restored him by placing the head of a powerful elephant upon his body.
He then blessed the child as Ganpati, the leader of divine forces, and declared that he would be worshipped before all gods at the beginning of every sacred ceremony.
